| Few people leave successful marketing careers to pursue a passion for the oceans and in doing so, take on one of the hardest PR jobs on the planet. A passionate environmentalist, diver of 15 years and lover of the oceans, Julie Andersen evolved her special relationship with sharks to a new level after watching them disappear from her favorite dive spots. Now her business is saving them.
Julie is a grassroots activist, who co-founded Shark Savers, a non-profit that protects sharks through localized campaigns fuelled by the power of the passionate. The 15,000+ Shark Savers have already taken on issues around the world from the Bahamas to Mozambique to Australia and are now working on innovative campaigns to eliminate the demand for shark fin in China. Julie is also a founder of Shark Angels, and one of three conservationist women on the frontlines, fighting to expose their exploitation, change perspectives and save sharks from extinction. A lifelong entrepreneur, Julie has channeled over 14 years of professional experience in advertising into this mission. Having built a business from the ground up, with upwards of 40 employees and $7 million in yearly revenue in a few years time, she brings a unique perspective and deep experience to the cause. She has developed innovative marketing strategies for clients like AOL, Porsche, Citibank, and Volkswagen, and now, applies that expertise to the business of saving the creatures that desperately need her help. Julie is also a passionate filmmaker, working for WildSphere Productions to create adventure and conservation content in the form of compelling films with a purpose – serving as a voice for sharks. As a shark defender, Julie traverses the world building awareness and confronting those threatening their survival. Currently, she resides in South Africa, leading a shark net removal movement as well as anti-finning efforts in nearby countries, while running education and media campaigns. Of course, she tries to spend as much time in the water with her new bosses as possible, filming and enjoying her new career path. “Sharks are disappearing without us noticing or caring. So few people realize they are facing extinction. And instead of being the monsters of our collective nightmares – they are magnificent creatures that play an incredibly valuable role on this earth. If we don’t act now, we are going to lose our sharks – and possibly even our oceans – our life support systems on this planet. We cannot be passive observers to the fact we are destroying our oceans – and our sharks. We need people to know what is going on, to stand up and to fight. We need people to care about sharks – and care about this planet. What is out of sight is out of mind. We simply cannot afford to keep this out of sight any longer.” Which shark are you? “I am definitely a blacktip shark. They are small bundles of power - incredibly energetic and active, fearless yet not irrationally so, thoughtful and calculated, frisky and playful.” |
